Mr. Patchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average cost of educating(a) a primary school pupil and (b) a secondary school pupil in the local education authorities within South Yorkshire.

In 1988–89, the latest year for which information is available, the school-based expenditure per nursery and primary pupil and per secondary pupil derived from information returned by the authorities was as shown in the table. Figures for nursery schools and for primary schools are not collected separately.
