Friend the Secretary of State for Defence announced in this House on498W 5 December 1989 that full contractor operation would be introduced at the atomic weapons establishment. As an interim step, before the introduction of the necessary legislation, a management contract has been awarded to Hunting-BRAE Ltd., a consortium led by Hunting Engineering Ltd. and including Brown and Root (UK) and AEA Technology, formerly the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The contract began on 1 October. Safety and security will continue to be of the highest priority.
