To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many complaints have been received by his Department and by the Advertising Standards Authority and Independent Broadcasting Authority regarding environment-friendly claims by product manufacturers in both 1989 and 1990.

I have been asked to reply.

My Department has not directly received any complaints about specific environment friendly claims by product manufacturers. I am informed that the Independent Broadcasting Authority does not keep complaints in this form, but the figures for the Advertising Standards Authority are as follows:
