HC Deb 22 October 1990 vol 178 c24W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he or officials in his Department have had with Ministers or officials of the Brazilian Government in regard to technical and planning assistance available from the United Kingdom to support RIMA environment impact studies, in particular on the development of ecologically balanced projects in the Amazonian rain forests.

Mrs. Chalker

There have been discussions between officials about assistance for training in environmental impact assessment. A proposal for British support for a joint review of Brazil's environmental impact assessment needs is at a preliminary planning stage and requires detailed discussions with the Brazilian Government. All project proposals for British support in Brazil are of course assessed for their likely environmental impact. Under our bilateral programmes we can support Brazilians to undertake in the United Kingdom training in environmental assessment techniques.
