HC Deb 19 October 1990 vol 177 c940W
Mr. George

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what advice he has given to health authorities on security at hospitals.

Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what discussions have taken place with the hospital authorities about the security arrangements at national health service hospitals; whether any working party exists to study these problems; and whether any circulars have been issued laying down standards of security within the hospital service.

Mr. Dorrell

Security arrangements at health service premises are the responsibility of local managers. To assist them in the difficult task of providing proper security arrangements the National Association of Health Authorities published a security manual for the national health service in December 1984, which the Department commended to health authorities as an invaluable source of advice.

The manual includes practical guidance on the development of a comprehensive security policy, appointment of security staff, the security of patients, staff and property, the prevention of trespass and intruder detection.
