HL Deb 29 November 1990 vol 523 c49WA
Lord Simon of Glaisdale

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What has been the annual income from parking meters since the inception of the scheme, and how much money has been spent each year on the provision of off-street parking over the same period.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

Information is not collected centrally which distinguishes either between revenue from on-street parking meters and off-street car parks, or between expenditure on the provision of off-street car parking as opposed to on-street parking. Figures available show that, in aggregate, local authority parking revenue currently amounts to over £300 million a year in England. Surplus on-street revenue can only be applied for further parking provision or for highways or public transport purposes.
