§ 18. Mr. ShersbyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make an estimate of the total saving to public funds during the current financial year by police authorities in England and Wales as a result of their no longer having to pay domestic rates for police officers(a) in respect of police authority-owned accommodation and (b) owner-occupied housing.
§ Mr. Peter LloydThe information needed to produce such estimates is not held centrally. The new arrangements protect the position of officers in service on or before 31 March 1990. Those who were in provided accommodation then are receiving an allowance of £300 per year for a transitional period of three years. Those in other than provided accommodation on 31 March are receiving a transitional rent allowance which includes an element for their former rates. Any savings in the current financial year are, therefore, likely to be very small.
