§ Mrs. RumboldAt the end of December 1989, 9,485 untried and convicted unsentenced prisoners were held in prison service establishments in England and Wales and none in police cells. The corresponding figures for the end of September 1990, the latest date for which the information is available, were 9,377 in prison service establishments and 768 in police cells.
