HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c636W
Mr. Kilfedder

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether Northern Ireland district councils, health and social services boards and education and library boards are empowered to make financial contributions towards the cost of a Northern Ireland centre in Brussels.

Mr. Cope

District councils have discretionary powers under the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972 to incur expenditure or to contribute towards the expenses of any voluntary body or association which carries on activities which are in the interests of the council, the council area or the inhabitants of the area.

Neither health and social services boards nor education and library boards are empowered to make financial contributions towards the cost of a Northern Ireland centre in Brussels.
