HC Deb 01 November 1990 vol 178 c733W
35. Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on staffing levels in dispersal prisons.

Mrs. Rumbold

Staffing levels in each of the dispersal prisons are set to take account of the nature of the inmate population and the work to be carried out in the particular establishment. On 1 October 1990 there were 2,566 officers (including principal officers and senior officers) serving in dispersal prisons. On the same date the number of inmates in the dispersal prisons was 2,814, that is an average of 1.1 for every officer in post. The ratio of officers to inmates varies significantly between the prisons reflecting differences in their design, scale and the particular facilities which they contain.
