HC Deb 24 May 1990 vol 173 cc323-4W
Mr. Mallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans he has to encourage American companies to invest in the constituency of Newry and Armagh.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 21 May 1990]: The Industrial Development Board is currently intensifying its efforts to attract industry from the United States, with the establishment of an independent representational network. We are already beginning to see an encouraging flow of new projects. I am undertaking a programme of visits to the United States, in some cases with the support of local politicians, and will be actively promoting the Newry and Armagh areas as prime locations within Northern Ireland. As the hon. Gentleman knows, we have also had discussions with representatives of the local community and are prepared to consider close co-operation between local representatives and Government Departments and their agencies in order to encourage industrial development and economic regeneration.
