§ Mr. CousinsTo ask the Secretary of State for Health whether guidelines have been issued to hospitals on the use of infant milk products containing soya.
§ Mr. DorrellYes. Advice to health authorities about infant feeding issued in July 1989 drew the attention of health care professionals to the report from the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Food Policy "Present day practice in Infant Feeding." This report stated that soya-based infant formulas can be used where an alternative to a formula based on cow's milk is clinically indicated but that in such cases a dietician's expert advice is essential to ensure that this does not lead to any nutritional deficiencies.
