HL Deb 01 May 1990 vol 518 c1030WA
Baroness Faithfull

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many changes of socks and underclothes prisoners have per week in each local prison in England and Wales.

Viscount Ullswater

Current policy is to provide sufficient stocks in each male establishment to issue three pairs of socks, two pairs of underpants and two vests to each prisoner and for these to be replaced one for one each week. The high level of vandalism of clothing and the rapid turnover of the population in local prisons mean that these targets are not always achieved.
