HC Deb 29 March 1990 vol 170 c308W
44. Mr. Dover

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many schools are involved in cross-community projects; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

In October 1987 I introduced the cross-community contact scheme to stimulate the development of cross-community projects between schools, and youth and community groups.

Since its introduction, some 400 schools—about one third of all schools in Northern Ireland—have applied for assistance under the scheme which has an actual budget in 1989–90 of £450,000. Grant is available for joint, continuing projects most of which are curriculum based.
