Deaths 1987 5,125 1988 5,052 1989 15,230 1 Provisional. The 7 per cent. decline in road deaths between the 1981–85 average and 1989 has achieved a level which represents one of the lowest in Europe. Nevertheless, we have set ourselves the target of reducing the toll by one third by the year 2000.
