§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 21 March 1990]: Information is available only on the book value of United Kingdom direct investment in Hong Kong which, at £1,924 million at end-1987, represented 0.5 per cent. of United Kingdom gross domestic product at factor cost (in current prices) in 1987. Direct investment is only one aspect of the United Kingdom's extensive commercial involvement in Hong Kong. The total value of the United Kingdom stake in Hong Kong is likely to be substantially greater than the figure for direct investment alone.
