To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total publicity and advertising expenditure, including for privatisation, of his Department and public bodies for which his Department has responsibility in(a) 1979 and (b)

The earliest year for which the figures requested are available is 1982–83 when expenditure totalled £10.113 million. The estimated expenditure for 1989–90 is £30.891 million.

Figures for 1979–80 are not readily available and could not be obtained without disproportionate expense.
