HC Deb 22 March 1990 vol 169 c720W
Mr. Madden

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) for how long the proposed environmental study is to be undertaken around the new phased array radar system currently being installed at the Fylingdales Royal Air Force station;

(2) if he will make it his policy to publish the results of the proposed environmental study to be undertaken around the new phased array radar system currently being installed at the Fylingdales Royal Air Force station;

(3) what is the purpose of, and what parameters are to be measured in, the proposed environmental study to be undertaken around the new phased array radar system currently being installed at the Fylingdales Royal Air Force station;

(4) which agency is to undertake the proposed environmental study to be undertaken around the new phased array radar system currently being installed at the Fylingdales Royal Air Force station.

Mr. Neubert

There are no plans for an environmental study to be undertaken round the new phased array radar being installed at RAF Fylingdales. The RAF signals engineering establishment will, however, conduct radio frequency assessments at the station over a period of about six months before the new radar system is brought into operation, to ensure that the radar transmissions from the system satisfy both the design specification and RAF safety regulations. On security grounds, it is not our practice to publish the results of such assessments.
