Dr. Hampson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what, at the latest available figures, is the cost of the older student additional allowance to students' mandatory grants; how many were awarded; and when the allowance was last uprated.

Mr. Jackson

In 1987–88, 12,218 assessments totalling £7,546,382 were made for the older students allowance for students receiving mandatory award. The allowance was last uprated with effect from September 1989.

Mr. Murphy

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether students who are following a foundation course which is a prerequisite for entry to a non-science and technology degree course are eligible for mandatory maintenance awards.
