To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons in Northern Ireland receive reduced earnings allowance; and what were the total sums paid out in Northern Ireland during the last two financial years for which figures are available.

Mr. Needham

At 8 May 1990 4,191 persons in Northern Ireland were receiving reduced earnings allowance.

Over £13 million was paid in benefits (including reduced earnings allowance) under the industrial injuries scheme in Northern Ireland in each of the 1987–88 and 1988–89 financial years. Separate figures are not available for reduced earnings allowance.
