61. Mr. Ian Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what changes he is proposing to make in the procedures governing the release into the community of mentally ill and other patients; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dorrell

On 14 May I announced that the Government were formally consulting on the introduction of the care programme approach for people with a serious mental illness. We propose that all district health authorities should introduce this approach from next April. It will cover all psychiatric patients discharged from hospital and should help ensure that they receive the community care they need.
