HC Deb 26 July 1990 vol 177 c587W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the number of mentally ill or disturbed men and women who are currently serving terms of imprisonment.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on 2 April 1990 to the hon. Member for Monklands, West (Mr. Clarke) at columns361–62.

Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he is taking to facilitate the transfer of mentally ill and disturbed prisoners to mental hospitals.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

None. I believe that the existing arrangements for the transfer to suitable hospitals of prisoners requiring in-patient treatment for mental disorder under sections 70 to 72 of the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 1984 are functioning satisfactorily.
