To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average pay of a newly qualified nurse in London at the present time.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The gross pay of a newly qualified nurse appointed to a position on the minimum of salary scale grade D and working in the centre of London, is £11,173 in respect of basic salary and London allowance. On average, a nurse on grade D will receive in addition approximately 18 per cent. in respect of leads and allowances.
