To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the shortfalls in manning for the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, listed by officers and other ranks, at the latest available date.

Shortfalls in service manpower are measured by comparing adult trained strengths against trained manpower requirements. As at 31 March 1990, shortfalls were:

  • Royal Navy—170 officers and 1,293 servicemen/women
  • Royal Marines—202 servicemen
  • Army—447 officers and 4,839 servicemen/women
  • Royal Air Force—371 officers and 5,718 servicemen/women
