To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many planning applications in respect of prisons have been approved since 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Since 1979, 23 prisons have received planning clearance either from the local planning authority or my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment. They are as follows:
