To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the number of service men counted as resident in the United Kingdom for poll tax purposes;

(2) where the service men are counted as resident in the United Kingdom for poll tax purposes located by base, county, and parliamentary constituency.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what consultations have taken place between local authorities and his Department on future poll tax payments by service men.

Ministry of Defence officials have met local authority representatives on a number of occasions to discuss various matters relating to the community charge. At a local level, every service unit has appointed an officer responsible for liaison with community charge registration officers.
