HC Deb 19 July 1990 vol 176 cc677-8W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list the persons who have conducted investigations under the Insurance Companies Acts.

Mr. Redwood

[holding answer 16 July 1990]: Such investigations are usually conducted by those concerned with insurance company regulation. To publish the names of the civil servants concerned would be against usual Government practice, and could lead others to the wrong conclusions if a named official subsequently made a routine visit to a different company which was not being investigated.

Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list the companies investigated since 1979 under the Insurance Companies Act.

Mr. Redwood

[holding answer 16 July 1990]: The table lists the number of investigations under section 44(2)(b) of the Insurance Companies Act 1982 since 1979.

Investigated
1979 1
1981 1
1983 2
1984 1
1987 3
1988 3
1989 1

These investigations are confidential. They may find that there is nothing of concern, or they may find problems that can be remedied fairly easily. To publish the name in such circumstances would do unjustified damage to the business.
