Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proposals he has to clear the backlog of cases at the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Westminster, North (Sir J. Wheeler) on Friday 8 December 1989 at columns409–17. Since then we have approved the board's request for 10 additional staff who are now in post.

We understand that the board will shortly submit its detailed request for a further increase in staff, which we will consider urgently.
