Mr. Lawrence

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will take steps to end the practice of allowing barrels of hazardous chemicals to be carried on open-sided lorries;

(2) what steps he has taken to assess the implications for regulations relating to the transport by road of hazardous wastes of the recent accident at Burton-upon-Trent in which sodium cyanide was spilt in a residential area from an open lorry.

Mr. Atkins

The Health and Safety Executive has been made aware of details of the incident. It will consider any change to the procedures as part of the practice of regularly reviewing the relevant regulations.
