To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when the new-style European Community model driving licences will be introduced in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Atkins

The new-style European Community model driving licence will be issued from early April 1990 to drivers with a full ordinary driving entitlement due to come into force on or after 1 June 1990.

Existing driving licences will remain valid after that date—there will be no need for drivers to exchange them for the new-style licences.
