Dr. ThomasTo ask the Prime Minister whether safety of the Daya Bay nuclear reactor and evacuation plans for Hong Kong in the event of an accident involving radiation release therefrom have been discussed with the Chinese authorities.
§ The Prime MinisterThere has been regular contact between the British and Chinese Governments about the safety of the plant. The Chinese authorities have assured us that the construction and operation of the plant will be to the highest safety standards. A consultancy undertaken by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, subsequently confirmed by experts from the International Atomic Energy Authority, concluded that planning for evacuation from Hong Kong was not required in view of the territory's distance from the plant.
