To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the annual expenditure on schemes to teach Welsh as a second language to adults in Wales.

Welsh Office support for the teaching of Welsh to adults amounts to over £305,000 in 1989–90. This complements the support given by LEAs, which are the main providers in this field.
