To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the estimated output of oil and gas from the North sea in the next decade; and what is the estimated consumption of oil and gas in the next decade.

Many factors will influence output and demand for oil and gas over such a long period. Of particular importance will be the extent to which new fields are found and brought into production. With exploration and drilling activity likely to reach an all time record for the United Kingdom this year, I am confident that the United Kingdom will become fully self-sufficient in gas and remain a net oil exporter well into the 1990s.
