To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers are now eligible for incentive allowances; and whether he intends to increase the number of allowances available.

An incentive allowance can be awarded to any qualified teacher paid on the main scale. My right hon. Friend has announced that he proposes to accept the recommendation of the interim advisory committee that the number of incentive allowances in primary and secondary schools should be increased to 189,000 from 1 September.
