To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he anticipates that he will reach the target of 20 operational city technology colleges.

Mrs. Rumbold

Twenty CTCs remain the target. The programme is making excellent progress. Three colleges have already opened, and 10 more will open in September 1990 or 1991. Target dates for the remainder depend upon practical considerations such as site acquisitions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many companies have agreed to sponsor city technology colleges.

Mrs. Rumbold

Over 160 companies and individuals are sponsoring the CTC initiative. Discussions are still continuing with other companies.
