HC Deb 21 February 1990 vol 167 c808W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Lord President of the Council if he will take steps to provide a feed of the television signal from the Chamber to offices and facilities used by Members in the vicinity of the Chamber.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

The report of the Select Committee on Televising of Proceedings of the House, agreed to by the House last June, did not envisage the provision, for the direct use of Members, of monitors carrying the live feed from the Chamber, with the exception of two sets in the Division Lobbies. The Committee has since approved the installation of monitors to meet the special requirements of Mr. Speaker and the Chairman of Ways and Means. So far as the rest of the House is concerned, the Committee has so far taken the view that the presence of monitors in Members' rooms could be intrusive and might constitute a distraction from the Chamber, leaving aside the question of cost. The Committee will, however, keep the matter under review during the course of the experiment.
