HC Deb 19 February 1990 vol 167 c497W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what aid Her Majesty's Government are giving to Nigeria and Cameroon, directly or indirectly related to helping protect the Oban-Korup rain forest; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

The Overseas Development Administration is contributing to the sustainable development of the Korup national park in Cameroon and the Oban hills area of Nigeria, both by supporting the World Wide Fund for Nature through the joint funding scheme and from bilateral country programme funds.

Our present total commitment for Korup is £700,000 over the period 1987 to 1992. It includes a soils survey, preparation of a master plan, and a contribution to the World Wide Fund for Nature's work in setting up new agroforestry areas and buffer zone protection.

For the Oban hills area, we have spent £210,000 on the design of a conservation master plan, and an Overseas Development Administration team has just visited Nigeria to draw up proposals for future assistance.
