To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what recent representations he has received about sterling's participation in the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system.

I have received a number of representations.

§ Mr. Teddy Taylor
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a further statement on the prospects of the United Kingdom seeking to place sterling within the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system.

§ Mr. Ryder
The Government have made it clear that the United Kingdom will join the exchange rate mechanism of the EMS during stage 1 of the Delors plan. The conditions for entry were set out following the Madrid summit.
