To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the future of the trust ports.

Mr. McLoughlin

We believe that there are advantages in the main commercial trust ports being transformed into companies. So far we have not been able to make room ourselves for the legislation needed to bring about such a change. Meanwhile the Clyde and the Tees and Hartlepool port authorities have promoted their own private measures.
