Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were employed in manufacturing industry in 1979; how many there were at the latest date for which figures are available; and what percentage of the total labour force they constituted on each occasion.

The table gives the number of employees in employment in manufacturing industries in Scotland in September 1979 and 1989, the latest date for which information is available. The figures are also shown expressed as a percentage of all employees in employment and as a percentage of the civilian work force in employment on these dates.
