To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he last had discussions with the president of the European Commission; and what was discused.

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer last met Mr. Delors at the Council of Economic and Finance Ministers on 18 December last year, as I reported to the House on 20 December,Official Report , Vol. 166, c. 244.

An analysis of applications for legal aid, which includes the number of applications made and the number refused on legal and financial grounds, is set out at appendix 2B(1)(a) of the Law Society's annual reports.

Statistics relating to appeals are set out in appendix 2F of the reports for 1987–88 and 1988–89. Information on appeals for earlier years is not available.

Figures for 1989 are currently available only to 31 March of that year.
