To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what consideration he has given to encouraging the introduction to the United Kingdom of the option for telephone subscribers to install equipment which will identify the number from which an incoming call is being made.

[holding answer 1 February 1990]: The provision of calling line identification facilities is primarily a matter for the network operators; but I know that the Director General of Telecommunications, Sir Bryan Carsberg, is keeping the position under close review.
