§ Mr. CabornTo ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will consider taking steps to institute a system of required requests for kidney donation in order to increase the number of kidneys available for transplant.
§ Mr. DorrellThe Government have initiated an audit of all intensive care units in England to assess potential for organ procurement, including kidneys. The results so far do not suggest that failure to request is a serious problem in England. A much more significant reason for the loss of suitable organs was refusal by relatives. We are carrying out a programme of national publicity to address this problem.
