HC Deb 04 December 1990 vol 182 c91W
Mr. Nellist

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give, broken down into the smallest district or region available, the numbers of people(a) arrested and (b) imprisoned for non-payment of (i) domestic and (ii) industrial and commercial rates in each of the last five years.

Mrs. Rumbold

[holding answer 30 November 1990]: The only readily available information is on prisoners committed for non-payment of rates of all types. This is published annually in "Prison statistics England and Wales" (table 6.3 of the latest volume, for 1989, Cm 1221), copies of which are in the Library.

Details of the local authority area are not recorded centrally. However, the table gives details, for 1989, of the counties in which the committing courts are situated. Similar information for earlier years could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
