To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give the target reductions for energy consumption in the buildings occupied by his Department.

Mr. Atkins

The Department of Transport aims to achieve real cost reductions in energy consumption of 5 per cent. per annum over the next five years.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give the energy consumption, broken down by fuel, of the buildings occupied by his Department, for the latest year available.

Mr. Atkins

Consumption of energy by the Department of Transport in 1989–90 is calculated to have been:

Energy consumption
Electricity 32 million kWh
Gas 1.6 million therms
Liquid fuel 240,000 litres
Solid fuel 185 tonnes
