HC Deb 24 April 1990 vol 171 c183W
60. Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a further statement on the measures which he is taking to deal with long-term unemployment.

Mr. Eggar

We have in place an extensive range of employment and training measures which have helped to ensure that long-term unemployed people have benefited fully from the general fall in unemployment.

Long-term unemployment has halved in the last two years and in that period has fallen faster than total unemployment. These measures are kept under regular review to ensure that they continue successfully and cost effectively to help long-term unemployed people back into work. Details of improvements to our counselling and advice services for unemployed people were provided in answer to my hon. Friend the Member for Gedling (Mr. Mitchell) on 5 April 1990, Official Report, column 647.
