To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the European Community proposals for extensification.

Mr. Curry

We shall shortly be announcing decisions on pilot schemes for extensification of beef and sheep following consultations with interested organisations and with the Commission.

We are also intending to issue a consultation document outlining a possible extensification scheme under which grant aid would be available to farmers wishing to convert from conventional to organic production.
