§ 108. Mr. Menzies CampbellTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received from British industry about the uniform business rate.
§ Mr. ChopeI refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Leicester, East (Mr. Vaz), on 5 February 1990,Official Report, column 446.
§ Mr. Gareth WardellTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the reasons for the difference in the rate poundage used for calculating the uniform business rate in Wales and in England.
§ Mr. ChopeThe uniform business rate has been set, in the light of the revaluation of all non-domestic properties in England and Wales, at the level necessary to raise broadly the same income from the business community in 1990–91 as was raised in 1989–90. This resulted in a rate poundage of 34.8p in England, where the national average non-domestic rate poundage in 1989–90 was 258.3p and 36.8p in Wales, where the 1989–90 average was 283.4p.
