To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the level of expenditure by local authorities on discretionary awards to 16 to 18-year-olds in 1987–88.

For the academic year 1987–88, local authorities in England and Wales reported expenditure of nearly £38 million on lesser-value discretionary awards made under section 2 of the 1962 Education Act (as amended) to students aged 16 to 18.
