What guidelines are given by the Department of Transport to county councils regarding directional signposting of major industrial and commercial locations; and
What policy the Hereford and Worcester County Council implements regarding the directional signposting of major industrial and commercial locations situated: (a) within the Hereford and Worcester County boundaries; (b) where the location is outside the county boundary, but has approach roads from within the county.
§ Viscount DavidsonIn all matters concerning direction signing, a balance has to be struck between providing enough information to enable drivers to reach their destinations, and the need to avoid unnecessary distraction for drivers and unsightly sign clutter.
The Government's advice is that direction signs for major industrial and commercial locations should be provided where there are sound traffic management or road safety reasons for doing so. Commercial names should not be shown on direction signs. This advice will be incorporated in the traffic signs manual, which is being revised in conjunction with the forthcoming review of the traffic signs regulations and general directions.
With regard to the noble Earl's second question, this is entirely a matter for Hereford and Worcester County Council.
